Concierge
The concierge really impressed me with their impeccable service. I was interested in purchasing an escapulario (protection necklace) and a staff member contacted 6+ jewelry stores across Leblon and Ipanema to have them send over images and prices of their current inventory. I think the Fasano name carries some weight in this town as all stores responded within 10 minutes with the requested information.
Room
After check-in, one of the attendants walked me to my room and provided a general overview of the property. There are many instagram worthy spots and I especially loved the design of the hallway on my floor! The recessed floor lighting, mohagony wood walls, red carpeting and the La Mamma armchair by Gaetano Pesce made me feel like I was in a Bond movie.
I stayed in the Superior Double Room with Courtyard View. Notable features include a small balcony, hard wood flooring, wood paneled walls, a writing desk and a chair, bluetooth speaker, rainfall shower head, and custom mirrors designed by Philippe Starck.
Rooftop pool and lounge
The crown jewel of this property is the rooftop pool lounge and it’s definitely the place to see and be seen. I spent entire afternoons lounged looking out into the magnificent views while remembering to take sips from my cocktail. There are no shortage of interesting locals and visitors to strike up a conversation!
I found the drink and food menu to have a nice variety to choose from. The tuna burger with side salad was simple and delicious. The service could have been more proactive as I found myself having to flag down the waiter for almost everything.
Breakfast buffet
Breakfast is served in a beautiful room and the buffet is staged to perfection. I was enticed to try everything! The spread included cold cuts, cheeses, smoked salmon, dried seeds and fruits, pastries and breads, and sparkling wine. I also ordered a frozen Açaí bowl at the waiter’s recommendation and it did not disappoint. Unlike the rooftop lounge, service was excellent.
Cost
I paid on average $2,343 Reais ($440 USD) per night including taxes and fees in March. This rate was higher than other properties I stayed during my trip in Rio. Breakfast was additional ~$65 USD total.
Security
The Fasano Hotel is located in front of a popular stretch of the Ipanema Beach. The entrance to the hotel was always well attended to and I felt safe going in and out of the property. A safe is also provided in the rooms.
In Rio it pays to be aware of your surroundings at all times and “blend-in.” This means not wearing designer clothes, keeping jewelry to a minimum, not displaying electronics etc while out in public. The well to do Cariocas (residents of Rio) go to considerable lengths to ensure they are not displaying wealth and visitors should take this page out of their book.
